The United States Adopted Names (USAN) Council was established on June 15, 1961, by a formal agreement between three organizations involved in the standardization of drug nomenclature: the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and the United States Pharmacopeial Convention, Inc. (USP).
The USAN Council (USANC) is comprised of a group of volunteers nominated to the Council based on relevant knowledge, experience and interest in pharmacology or medicinal chemistry, with medical practical experience desirable. The group meets twice per year to discuss items of interest and policy.
The AMA is currently requesting nominees for possible appointment to USANC. An initial review of the credentials of nominees is completed before submitting recommendations to the Board of Trustees, which makes the final selection for appointment.

Council member
Description: USANC is the FDA-recognized nomenclature agency responsible for the selection of nonproprietary (generic) names for all chemical and biologic single-entity drugs marketed in the United States. USANC represents the combined, organized efforts of the professions of medicine and pharmacy, the national drug compendium, and the federal drug regulatory agency, working through their duly appointed representatives to systematize drug nomenclature and to create useful and conflict-free generic names.
Term: USANC is composed of five members who are appointed for one-year terms. Members are eligible to succeed themselves up to a maximum of 10 years.
Time requirements: Required to review USAN applications and attend two USANC meetings per year.
Criteria for nominations: Council members are chemists, pharmacologists, pharmacists and physicians, with additional specialties in the drug regulatory process. The nominees to USANC must have an interest in drug nomenclature and the requisite background.
