After the June House of Delegates meeting was suspended due to the coronavirus, all of us were looking forward to an in-person Interim Meeting. Unfortunately, the pandemic still rages across our country, and its future course remains uncertain.

As a medical association to whom the public looks for trusted information and guidance, we are called upon to set an example to keep our population safe. After much consideration and consultation with many, and after several requests from delegates and sections to expedite a decision regarding the upcoming Interim Meeting of our HOD, your speakers and board have come to the conclusion that an in-person meeting is not advisable.

Therefore, this notice shall serve to inform members of our AMA House of Delegates, Section Governing Councils, and Federation Leadership that by action of our American Medical Association Board of Trustees on July 25, 2020, the November 2020 Interim Meeting will not be held in San Diego, California and that a virtual meeting of the AMA House of Delegates will be conducted on Nov. 14-17, 2020.

While we understand that this announcement will undoubtedly bring with it many questions in regard to the nature of this meeting, be assured that planning is already underway. Your speakers can confirm that we do intend to hold a policy discussion in virtual format; however, we ask all delegations to please limit your resolution submissions to only those that are urgent or of the highest priority.

Further details will be presented by your speakers at the Aug. 27 meeting of the BOT, and we will be sending you further information after that meeting. Until that time, we ask that you hold open the dates previously scheduled for the meeting and also those dates prior to the HOD meeting which were previously scheduled for associated section and council meetings. While we do not yet know if all of these meetings will proceed on the previously scheduled dates or if all of these days will be utilized, it is prudent to keep them open on your calendars at this point.

Your speakers are working diligently to design a meeting that will allow policy debate and secure voting within the limitations of the virtual platform. We appreciate your continued patience and understanding. Stay safe and healthy as we further navigate these unprecedented times.
